The term retail has become popular in recent years, but its meaning makes no more than reference to retail or retail. This sector includes all commercial premises with direct sales to the public. The most common are:

  • clothing and accessories stores
  • bookstores and stationery stores
  • Hardware stores
  • Pharmacy
  • supermarkets
  • stores of household goods, decoration and furniture.

In this world of retail, the customer intentionally looks at the product that is being offered, but there are other stimuli that condition their purchase decisions without them being aware. This is where lighting plays a very important role.

Keys to a perfect lighting design in retail

In this article, from Luxes, we will give you recommendations on both the lighting of the interior and exterior of your shops, to guarantee a pleasant experience to the client.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

The showcase is the first stimulus that the client receives and its function is to attract all of them to the interior of the establishment. Without correct lighting, the content of this can go completely unnoticed, no matter how good quality the exposed items are.

The first question we have to ask ourselves when designing our showcase is, How much light do I need?
Experts recommend a minimum of 2000 luxes. Starting from that base, we must bear in mind that if dark colors predominate in the showcase we will need more light, but if instead, it is the light colors that stand out we will need less light. One way to highlight one product above others is to give it the right lighting.

Something that gives us a lot of play also when designing our showcase is the opening angle. If we seek to create soft and natural shadows, we have to use a wide angle of light. If, on the other hand, our intention is to create more pronounced shadows, it is best to use a smaller opening angle.

On the other hand, we have the outer signs that serve to indicate to the consumer what trade he is facing. Nowadays there are already many LED signs or digital LED screens that offer great visibility by themselves, apart from standing out among conventional signs. But if you do not have a sign of these characteristics, but a conventional sign, you must make sure that it is sufficiently well lit so that it can be clearly read by all the people who pass the area and can quickly identify your business.

To do this, we can use LED spotlights located in the upper or lower part of the sign that provide front lighting or play with side light to give a more decorative touch.

INTERIOR LIGHTING

Now we will move to the interior of our business and for this we will remember the UNE 12464.1, European regulation on interior lighting that marks the following table for retail establishments.

  • The requirements of both luminance and UGR are determined by the type of store.

CRI

But just as important is the quantity of light, as the quality of it. This is where the Color Rendering Index (CRI) or CRI takes on. The CRI is a unit that measures the ability of a light source to accurately reproduce the colors of objects. Our brain is programmed to come to a quick conclusion and during the first 90 seconds we observe something, most of the information that comes to us is related to color. The higher the CRI level, the better the color reproduction.

Color temperature

The color temperature we will use will depend on the product. For example, in jewelry stores it is recommended to use cold light, 5,000ºK – 6,500ºK, to show off the brightness of the piece. If we used warm light we would give the effect that the jewel yellows.

On the other hand, in the shops dedicated to food it is sought to highlight the freshness of the product. As examples, in greengrocers warm tones are used to highlight their natural colors, in fishmongers white and cold light is recommended and in butchers pink light to highlight the color of the meat.

For clothing stores and a large part of small shops such as stationery stores, a neutral type of light is recommended, with a color temperature of 4500ºK on average, since it is the most similar to natural light and does not distort the colors.

LED Lighting

The lighting in this type of establishment is constantly on, so LED luminaires can be our best ally, since they provide lower energy consumption and long durability. Compared to traditional lighting, LED consumes up to 85% less and offers between 35,000 and 50,000 hours of operation. They also represent a benefit for the environment, since being more efficient they are less polluting and produce less CO2.
