Lighting is an essential part of any architectural project. It influences the aesthetics of the space, visual comfort, energy efficiency, safety, and the functionality of each environment.

Today, thanks to BIM methodology, lighting projects can be developed with greater precision, coordination, and control from the early design phases to the final installation.

At Luxes, we work with BIM files to carry out our lighting projects, integrating the fixtures within the digital model of the building and facilitating a clearer, more technical, and efficient planning process.

¿Qué es BIM?

BIM, which stands for Building Information Modeling, means Building Information Modeling. It is a work methodology that allows the creation of intelligent digital models of buildings, where each element contains useful technical information for design, construction, and maintenance.

Instead of working solely with 2D plans, BIM allows for the visualization of the project in 3D and incorporates real data for each component: materials, dimensions, location, technical characteristics, costs, maintenance, and performance.

¿Qué es BIM aplicado a la iluminación?

In lighting, BIM allows for the representation of fixtures within the digital model of the building. Each fixture becomes an element with associated technical information.

A BIM file of a luminaire may include data such as:

  • Power
  • Light flux
  • Color temperature
  • Color Rendering Index
  • Opening angle
  • Dimensions
  • Installation height
  • Mounting type
  • Regulation system
  • Product reference
  • Manufacturer
  • Photometric file

Thanks to this information, architects, engineers, lighting designers, and installers can work from the same database, reducing errors and improving project coordination.

Del producto real al objeto BIM

In order for a luminaire to be used within a BIM model, it must first be converted into a digital object. This object represents the real product with simplified geometry and associated technical data.

The geometry must be clear enough to identify the product, but light enough not to overload the model. The data, on the other hand, must be precise and useful: dimensions, consumption, lighting performance, installation system, and commercial references.

In lighting, photometry also takes on special importance. IES or LDT files allow for the analysis of how light is distributed in space and help verify whether the proposed solution meets the project's requirements.

Cómo ayuda BIM durante el diseño lumínico

Working with BIM allows for the study of lighting within the real context of the building. The fixtures are placed on ceilings, facades, pathways, work areas, or decorative spaces, taking into account the architecture and the use of each area.

This helps make more precise decisions about the location, orientation, mounting height, and type of fixture. It also allows for reviewing the aesthetic integration of the product within the space and assessing how it relates to other construction elements.

In complex projects, this vision is particularly useful for coordinating lighting fixtures with electrical installations, HVAC, structures, furniture, or false ceilings.

Cómo trabajamos en Luxes

At Luxes, we incorporate BIM files into our lighting projects to provide a more technical planning approach tailored to the needs of each space.

We work on lighting from the digital model, studying the placement of fixtures, their integration with the architecture, and the technical requirements of the project. This allows us to collaborate more smoothly with architects, interior designers, engineering teams, and construction crews.

Our approach aims to ensure that each lighting solution is well-defined from the initial design to the final installation.
